Background of Gua Massa
History of Gua Massa
Massa Cave, located in Kg Semadang Bau Sarawak, is a significant economic resource for the Bidayuh people of Bau, Sarawak. Previously a thick forest area, the cave now provides valuable products such as bird nests, bat droppings used as fertilizer, and various wildlife. Additionally, surrounding flora serves as traditional medicine, contributing to the villagers' income.
In 2021, after the COVID-19 pandemic, the cave opened to the public under the management of Mr. Hannas Anak Herani, who recognized its potential for economic development. Collaborating with governmental and non-governmental entities like the Sarawak Government, the Sarawak Department of Agriculture, and the Center for Biodiversity, initiatives such as agriculture, herbal distillation, and species documentation are underway to enhance the area's economic and environmental sustainability.
Mitos of Gua Massa
According to local beliefs, Gua Massa was once submerged under the sea. This theory arises from the erosion patterns resembling waves on the cave rocks. Furthermore, the discovery of terebridae shells within the cave suggests that macaques may have consumed these shells and brought them to the cave area.
